Why your business should be more like Stranger Things

Paris, France - June 27, 2022: Living room of Joyce in Stranger Things Pop-up store on avenue Champs Elysees

If you’ve ever shown an investor your pitch deck and been met with total apathy then you are definitely not alone. Not because your idea is bad (well probably not) but more than likely because your deck is.

It’s probably too long, probably full of too much detail and probably lacking any sense of personality.

But there is a simple solution. Be more like Stranger Things.

The original pitch deck for the global Netflix phenomenon (then known as Montauk) is just 23 pages long, more than half the deck is just images and each key topic has no more than a page.

And most importantly it looks fantastic. The design mirrors the content and looks like it reads. The design of the deck IS the pitch.

From the simulation of an old book found in a thrift store with its marked and creased pages to the choice of images and even the font, everything about the deck sells the concept as much as the words do. No granular detail or extended explanation it just hooks the audience and immerses them in the product and the concept.

Because a pitch (be it for a film or a biotech start-up) is about engaging the investor and selling the vision. Absolutely include information that helps them make a positive decision (even the Stranger Things deck discusses franchising and ROI), but leave out anything and everything that doesn’t (you can get into the detail once your investor is interested) and above all else make sure you look the part while you’re doing it.

80 page, cut and paste, out of the box template decks are killing your idea (and possibly your audience). So keep it tight, keep it focused and get someone who knows what they are doing to make it look the business.

Be more Stranger Things.
